The Legacy of Hazel Johnson, Mother of the Environmental Justice Movement

  • Online Event via Zoom. Registrations are required. (map)

This Women’s History Month program will feature Cheryl Johnson, pictured here, who will speak about her mother, Hazel Johnson’s work as the Mother of Environment Justice in Altgeld Gardens Housing Project on Chicago’s Southeast Side. In 1979, Hazel founded People for Community Recovery (P.R.C.) to demand clean up of toxic waste dumps left by industries that once surrounded Altgeld Gardens. Her work led to Environmental Justice Executive Order 12898 signed by President Clinton in 1994, a milestone requiring all federal agencies to incorporate environmental justice concerns in their mandates. This online program is organized by Chicago Public Library and co-sponsored by CWHC.
